Halal, doubtful or haram? Scan and know.
Halal Scanner checks what food products contain in seconds, right in the shop. Every verdict is explained.
Completely free: no account, no ads, no limits.

What the app does
Barcode scan
The verdict appears at once: Halal, Doubtful or Haram, with the ingredients and additives that raise questions listed first.
Label photo
No barcode, or a product missing from the database? Take a photo of the ingredient list: the text is read on your phone, nothing is sent.
One level: Strict
The app flags everything that may be doubtful (insects, additives of uncertain origin, rennet, alcohol vinegar…) and explains each criterion.
Certifying bodies
AVS, Achahada, Grande Mosquée de Paris, Grande Mosquée de Lyon, ACMIF: recognised on the packaging and shown.
Ingredients in many languages
Lists in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish and Turkish are analysed.
Private
No account, no ads, no trackers. Your history and favourites stay on your phone.
How it works
- Point at a product's barcode (or take a photo of its ingredient list).
- The app reads the composition from Open Food Facts, an open, collaborative database.
- Each ingredient is checked against public rules: pork, alcohol, uncertified meat, additives of animal origin…
- You see the verdict, what raises questions, and why.
Guides: are these ingredients halal?
E471: halal or haram?
E471 is halal when it is plant-based or certified, haram when it comes from pork. Without any detail on the packaging it is considered doubtful.
Read the guide →Is gelatin halal?
Pork gelatin is haram. Beef gelatin is halal only when the animal was slaughtered according to the rite and this is certified. Fish gelatin is accepted.
Read the guide →Is carmine (E120) halal?
Carmine comes from an insect, the cochineal. Scholars disagree: some accept it, others do not. Halal Scanner flags it as doubtful.
Read the guide →Is wine vinegar halal?
Many scholars consider wine vinegar permissible, because the alcohol has turned into vinegar. Others prefer to avoid it. Halal Scanner flags it as doubtful (Strict level).

Is Halal Scanner free?
Yes, completely. Scanning, label photos, search, product pages, history and favourites are free and unlimited, with no account and no ads.
How does the app decide that a product is halal, doubtful or haram?
A haram ingredient (pork, alcohol, blood…) always prevails. A product certified by a recognised body is halal. Uncertified ingredients of animal origin and additives of uncertain origin (E471, gelatin…) make it doubtful. With none of these, the product is halal. The rules are detailed in the app under “Our criteria”.
Is the app's verdict a halal certification?
No. Halal Scanner is an information aid. The data is public and collaborative and may contain errors. Only the logo of a recognised certifying body on the packaging is a guarantee.
Where does the product information come from?
From Open Food Facts, an open, collaborative database (ODbL licence) listing millions of products worldwide. You can complete an incomplete product page there, from the app.
