Is wine vinegar halal?

Many scholars consider wine vinegar permissible, because the alcohol has turned into vinegar. Others prefer to avoid it. Halal Scanner flags it as doubtful (Strict level).

How vinegar is made

Vinegar comes from the fermentation of an alcoholic drink (wine, cider) or of spirit: bacteria turn the alcohol into acetic acid. Balsamic vinegar is made from grape must and wine vinegar. “Spirit vinegar” (white vinegar) comes from agricultural alcohol.

Why many consider it permissible

Once the transformation is complete, what remains is no longer wine but vinegar, a different substance. Many scholars rely on this change of nature to consider vinegar permissible whatever its origin, all the more as the Prophet ﷺ praised vinegar.

Why some avoid it

Others distinguish according to how the wine became vinegar, or prefer, as a precaution, to avoid any vinegar made from an alcoholic drink. Apple cider, rice or spirit vinegar, or lemon juice, are alternatives.

What Halal Scanner does

The app does not count wine, cider or spirit vinegar as alcohol, but it flags these vinegars (balsamic included) as doubtful and highlights them in the ingredient list.
